Synopsis of Inside No. 9

Inside No. 9 is a British black comedy anthology created by Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith, which airs on BBC Two. Each installment is a standalone story of about 30 minutes, with new characters and a new setting. The first episode, "Sardines," takes place in a closet, and being trapped there is the starting point of the plot. Pemberton and Shearsmith usually star in each episode, though not always in the lead roles. The episodes share only one setting, related to number 9, and a bronze hare statue hidden in all of them. The tone shifts from one story to the next, but every episode mixes comedy with horror or dark humor.

Trivia about Inside No. 9

The closet that gives the first episode, "Sardines," its name was inspired by a piece of furniture in the writers' own workspace.

For the second season, the writers were able to rely on two recurring sets, built at Twickenham Studios: a fake train compartment and a fake flat.

Unlike the episodes filmed in studio, "The Trial of Elizabeth Gadge" was shot in a barn at the Chiltern Open Air Museum.

Critic Sean O'Grady described the live special from October 2018 as extraordinarily bold and ambitious.

Steve Pemberton auctioned off his personal copy of the script for "Plodding On," signed by most of the main cast across all nine seasons.

During filming of "La Couchette," the train compartment set was mounted on springs to mimic the motion of a train, but Steve Pemberton got motion sickness and threw up on the first day.

"Boo to a Goose," the premiere of the ninth season, was episode number 50 of the series and featured Siobhan Finneran and Charlie Cooper among its guest cast.

To create the sound of knocks on a car window in "The Stakeout," director Guillem Morales took apart a glass table and used a microphone during editing.
