Oona Chaplin was born in Madrid during the summer of 1986 with a family tree that weighs more than any Hollywood résumé. The daughter of Geraldine Chaplin and Chilean filmmaker Patricio Castilla, she grew up between Switzerland, Madrid and Cuba, learning to speak three languages fluently. Her training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London gave her the technique she needed to step out of her grandfather's shadow.
Before filming, she reads the script looking for characters who don't depend on her family legacy.
In 2007 she made her British television debut with a small role in Spooks, and soon realized that London's industry valued her technical training more than her ancestry. She worked on BBC productions, where she learned to handle the pacing of period drama without slipping into histrionics.
And it worked.
But her first major international break didn't come until 2012, when she played Talisa Maegyr in Game of Thrones. The character allowed her to show raw vulnerability in a series where most actors aimed for dramatic excess. The death of her character in the episode The Rains of Castamere in 2013 remains a landmark moment for fans of the HBO drama.
After her time on the dragon series, she sought more intimate projects in Spanish and British independent film. In 2014 she starred in the episode White Christmas of Black Mirror, playing a woman whose consciousness becomes trapped in a digital device.
It was one of the most suffocating performances in television drama of that decade.
In 2017 she shot Tierra firme alongside her mother and Natalia Tena, directed by Carlos Marqués-Marcet. The film explores motherhood and new family structures on a boat in the canals of London, with a naturalness that avoids the usual melodrama. For her, cinema is about capturing the truth of human bonds above the artifice of the script.
James Cameron chose her in 2017 to join the Avatar sequels, playing Varang.
The director needed an actress capable of conveying physical and emotional strength through motion capture in a complex digital environment. So she spent months training to meet the technical demands of a blockbuster that redefines filmmaking technology.
In 2022, he starred in the espionage miniseries Treason for Netflix, sharing the screen with Charlie Cox. The plot centers on MI6 secrets and how personal relationships can compromise national security. Filming for the Avatar sequels stretched over several years at studios in New Zealand.
She took part in the horror film Lullaby in 2022, playing a mother who discovers a lullaby in an old book and awakens a demon. Still, her approach has always been to keep one foot in independent cinema while navigating her presence in the major studios of Los Angeles.
Production on Avatar: Fire and Ash set its release for December 2025.
