Matt Gerald has a jaw that seems sculpted to take hits. In 2009, James Cameron put him to the test in Avatar. But before reaching Pandora, this Miami-born actor was already well acquainted with the grind of supporting roles.
Matt Gerald is a supporting actor who doesn't ask for permission.
He debuted in Starstruck in 1998 and soon realized his build would open doors in action films. In 2003, he appeared in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. They were brief roles where his physical presence said more than his dialogue.
Gerald wasn't chasing sole stardom but longevity. In 2004, he played Tommy Hisk in The Shield and showed that he could bring humanity to violent characters. Still, the industry typecast him in military uniforms or prison jumpsuits.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2015, his turn came to enter the Marvel universe through Netflix. He played Melvin Potter in the series Daredevil. The character was a tailor with mental health struggles who made armored suits for the hero and the city's villains.
It was a restrained performance in which Gerald avoided the mindless thug stereotype. But audiences recognized him mostly for his vulnerable gaze beneath an imposing physique. He shot seven episodes between 2015 and 2018, which brought him international visibility that commercial film sometimes denied him.
Before that breakthrough, he appeared in G.I. Joe: Retaliation in 2013. He shared the screen with Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis in a 130-million-dollar production. But his return to big-budget filmmaking came through James Cameron.
Gerald is one of the few actors who has worked with the Canadian director more than once.
In 2022, he returned to play Corporal Lyle Wainfleet in Avatar: The Way of Water. This time his character came back as a Recombinant (an avatar carrying the memories of a dead soldier). The motion-capture process required the actor to wear sensor suits for months.
The result was one of the highest-grossing films of all time. But Gerald prefers to keep a low profile away from the spotlight. In 2023, he joined the cast of The Chosen to play Simon the Zealot in a historical drama.
This actor's career is measured by how many times he has died on screen. He has appeared in more than 60 productions across television and film. The contract for the Avatar sequels guarantees his presence in the industry through 2028.
