Kristin Davis arrived in New York with little money and a classical training that nobody seemed to value in commercial casting calls. She opened a yoga studio with a friend to pay the rent while she waited for a break that didn't come in the city's theaters.
Then television came calling.
In 1995, she joined the cast of Melrose Place to play Brooke Armstrong. Viewers hated her character so much that the writers had her killed off in a pool shortly afterward so the ratings wouldn't sink.
But that animosity was her best school.
She learned to handle negative fame before the internet amplified everything. After that quiet firing, she spent months reading scripts that only sought to repeat the manipulative, cold woman profile she was determined to avoid at all costs.
The script for Sex and the City reached her in 1998, and Davis saw something different in Charlotte York. She wasn't the scene-stealing lead (that role belonged to Carrie Bradshaw), but she was the moral anchor of a group of friends who were about to change cable television.
Nine Emmy nominations back up a body of work that was often confused with her own personality. Davis insisted that Charlotte not be just a conservative woman in search of a rich husband, and she played the nuances of frustration with a restraint few critics picked up on.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2009, she appeared in the comedy Couples Retreat, which grossed more than $170 million worldwide. Despite those numbers, movies never offered her the complex roles she found on the London stage or on Broadway.
Her real interest was in Kenya.
Since 2009, she has worked with the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust to protect orphaned elephants. It isn't a social media image campaign: Davis funds much of the rescue expeditions out of her own pocket and has spent months living in base camps without electricity.
In 2021, she returned to HBO's universe with the series And Just Like That…, also taking on executive producing duties. The project sparked intense debate about aging actresses on screen, and Davis had to publicly defend the aesthetic choices for her character under online scrutiny.
In 2024, filming the third season in New York mobilized a crew of more than two hundred people per workday.
