Cynthia Nixon was already earning Broadway paychecks before finishing high school. In 1980 she made her debut in The Philadelphia Story, and four years later she starred in a technical anomaly that New York actors' unions still remember.
During 1984, she juggled two hit productions at the same time. She appeared in the first act of The Real Thing and ran two blocks to make it on time for her scene in Hurlyburly. Mike Nichols directed both plays, and allowed the backstage shuffle that no other actor has repeated in modern American theater history.
She managed to perform in two different plays at the same time.
That capacity for high-level multitasking defined her early career. On screen, she appeared in Amadeus as Mozart's maid, a brief role but one backed by the discipline of a large-scale period production. Still, the general public didn't know her name until the late 1990s.
When she accepted the role of Miranda Hobbes in 1998, she wasn't chasing worldwide fame. The script for Sex and the City presented a cynical, pragmatic lawyer who served as a counterpoint to the sugary sweetness of the other leads. Nixon brought a dry acting style that clashed with the aesthetics of cocktails and expensive shoes.
And the gamble paid off.
Her work on the HBO series earned her three consecutive Emmy Award nominations. In 2004, she took home the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress and closed out a six-season run that made her a multimillionaire thanks to syndication rights. Despite the money she earned, she never stopped looking for roles in independent productions or risky theater projects.
In 2006, she returned to the stage in Rabbit Hole. She won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for her role as a mother trying to get past the death of her son. New York critics stopped seeing her as the television lawyer and started treating her as the natural heir to the great dames of classic theater.
Nixon's ambition jumped off the screen in 2018. She ran in the Democratic primary for governor of New York, taking on the party establishment. Her campaign focused on economic inequality and improving the subway system, an unglamorous topic for a Hollywood star.
She lost the primary, but she changed the party's conversation.
She won 34.4% of the vote against Andrew Cuomo. It was a clear loss in numbers but a win in political influence. After her election detour, she returned to big-budget television with The Gilded Age in 2022. In this Julian Fellowes series, she plays Ada Brook, a character who requires a costume made of fifteen layers of fabric for every shoot.
Her return to the world where she started came with And Just Like That… beginning in 2021. In this new phase, she also took on directing duties behind the camera for several episodes. Production of the third season in 2024 set location logistics costs that exceed ten million dollars per episode.
