Synopsis of Sex and the City

Carrie Bradshaw is a writer who publishes a column about sex and dating in New York. She lives in the city with three lifelong friends, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha, who are in their thirties and forties. All of them enjoy being single and dive into the world of dating in bars, restaurants and trendy clubs. Created by Darren Star for HBO, the series starring Sarah Jessica Parker follows their romantic experiences and their take on relationships. Each episode opens with Carrie's voice as she reflects while writing her weekly column. Among the four women, they share doubts about love, sex and friendship, and each makes her own choices in a city where dates never seem to end.

Trivia about Sex and the City

Candace Bushnell wrote the column in the first person, but later invented Carrie, presented as her friend, so that her parents wouldn't know they were reading about her sex life.
Sarah Jessica Parker hated the pilot at first and feared it could end their career. They even offered to work for free in three HBO movies to get out of their contract.
HBO scheduled the series on Sunday nights, a time slot the broadcast networks had tended to neglect, and with it and The Sopranos created its popular Sunday lineup.
The New York Times credited the series and its costume designer, Patricia Field, with launching trends such as dog tag necklaces, Manolo Blahnik shoes, and visible bra straps.
To mark its 65 anniversary, TV Guide named the episode "My Motherboard, My Self" the eighth-best of the 21st century.
In 2023, Variety ranked the series sixth on its list of the greatest TV shows of all time.
The spin-off "And Just Like That..." ended with its third season in 2025. HBO expanded it from ten to twelve episodes to air a two-part finale.
