John Corbett spent six years working in a steel factory in West Virginia. Extreme heat and the noise of the machines were his daily routine until a back injury forced him to look for work elsewhere. He moved to California and began studying drama while working part-time as a hairdresser.
It was not a romantic decision.
In 1988, he landed his first role on the series Wonder Years, playing Karen Arnold's boyfriend. It was a brief appearance but enough for casting directors to notice his relaxed presence. Corbett never projected the intensity of other actors of his generation.
In 1990, he got his big break playing Chris Stevens in Northern Exposure. The philosophical radio DJ and former convict earned him an Emmy nomination and gave him massive visibility on American television. But the actor didn't want to be boxed into a single type going forward.
His arrival on Sex and the City in 2000 shifted the balance of the HBO series. Aidan Shaw represented stability and commitment against the emotional instability of the other leads. Millions of viewers preferred his honesty over the cynicism of Mr. Big during the seasons he appeared in.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2002, he starred in My Big Fat Greek Wedding alongside Nia Vardalos. The film became a financial phenomenon, grossing more than $360 million on a budget of just five million dollars. Corbett played Ian Miller, a vegetarian professor, and established himself as the ideal leading man for low-key romantic comedy.
Despite his commercial success, the actor always kept a careful distance from the studio machinery. He preferred spending time at his ranch in Santa Barbara to attending industry parties in Los Angeles. That detachment allowed him to manage his image without the wear and tear typical of top-tier stars.
Beyond acting, Corbett always had his eyes set on Nashville. In 2006 he released his first country album, titled with his own name, which reached number 45 on the specialty charts. He wasn't chasing critical praise; he was settling a long-overdue debt to his roots in Virginia.
Music was his true refuge.
In 2013, he released his second album, titled Leaving Nothin'. During those years, he alternated studio recordings with supporting roles in independent films and series that did not always win over audiences. Still, his reputation as a reliable actor kept him in steady work on mid-budget productions.
In 2020, he married actress Bo Derek after nearly two decades of a stable relationship. It was a private ceremony that only became public to the media months after it took place. Corbett has always guarded his private life with professional discretion, which is rare in the digital world of celebrities.
In 2023, he returned to his role as Aidan Shaw in the second season of And Just Like That… to wrap up storylines left open twenty years earlier. Filming his scenes in New York generated intense media buzz, which the studio tried to control with strict confidentiality agreements. That same year, 2023, he took part in the third installment of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, filmed entirely on location in Greece.
The film had a production budget of $25 million.
