Building an Office Myth

Mary Cathleen Collins was sixteen years old when she met John Derek in Greece.

He was twice her age and was still married to actress Linda Evans, but that didn't stop a machine determined to create Hollywood's next star under a scorching sun. They traveled to Germany to shoot Fantasies in 1973 because California law prohibited their relationship due to her being a minor.

And then Blake Edwards came along.

The director was looking for a woman who could obsess Dudley Moore in 10, and he found in her the exact mix of coldness and magnetism. That premiere in 1979 grossed more than $74 million in the United States alone and turned cornrow braids into a global aesthetic phenomenon.

That scene of her running along a Mexican beach to Ravel's Bolero changed the rules of movie marketing. Bo Derek didn't need to say much, because her physical presence generated box office returns that studios hadn't seen in years.

Absolute Control of the Camera

Bo Derek decided that her career would belong to her husband and turned down offers from prestigious directors to star in family productions. In 1981, they shot Tarzan, the Ape Man, a film where the script mattered less than the light falling on her skin.

The critics were merciless.

But audiences flocked to theaters, and the movie made massive profits despite attacks from the specialized press. They tried again with Bolero in 1984, a film that finished off her reputation as an actress by focusing entirely on visual eroticism.

Because the Dereks' films were less about telling stories and more about selling an unreachable aesthetic, which eventually wore out audiences by the end of the decade. The couple's last collaboration was Ghosts Can't Do It in 1989, a film that flopped at the box office and featured a cameo by Donald Trump.

The bet on creative isolation was a financial mistake.

Surviving the Hurricane

John Derek's death in 1998 marked an abrupt break in her personal and professional life. She had to learn to manage on her own after decades under the supervision of a man who controlled every shot of her movies.

She took supporting roles in comedies such as Tommy Boy in 1995 and appeared in various mid-budget TV series. In 2002, she began a relationship with actor John Corbett and stepped away from the Los Angeles spotlight to focus on breeding Andalusian horses at her ranch in Santa Ynez.

Her appearance in Sharknado 3 in 2015 confirmed that she had embraced her status as a cult figure, without pretending to be a great actress. She married Corbett in 2020 in a private ceremony after nearly twenty years together.

In 2023, she appeared in the documentary In Search of Bo Derek, which takes a technical look at her own impact on popular culture. The independent production company that manages her image rights reported gross revenue of $1.2 million in the last fiscal year analyzed.
