Mark L. Young moved to Los Angeles at nine years old. He wasn't after fame but a paycheck to pay the bills of a family that saw the child's talent as an economic lifeline. In 2003 he landed his first role in the series Six Feet Under. It was a trial by fire in a prestige production where he learned that acting is more about listening than talking.
And it worked.
That start led to small roles on The O.C. and Dexter. At the time, casting directors saw him as the ideal troubled teenager. He had a lost and defiant look that fit the crime dramas of the mid-2000s.
The industry quickly typecast Young in supporting roles, but he knew how to make every minute on screen count. In 2013 he played Scottie P in the comedy We're the Millers. His line about having no regrets tattoos became a viral sensation years before the concept of memes went mainstream. That gift for physical comedy opened doors that had stayed closed because of his dramatic profile.
It was a much-needed change of pace.
Young never wanted to be the leading man. He prefers characters who make audiences uncomfortable or seem out of place. In 2014 he reprised his role as Shayne in the series The Comeback alongside Lisa Kudrow. There, he proved he could hold his own against industry veterans with a restrained performance.
Genre films gave him the chance to explore darker material. In 2015 he took part in The Curse of Downers Grove under the direction of Derick Martini. The shoot was difficult, and critics gave it a cold reception. But it taught Young that control over your career is an illusion and that all that's left is the daily grind.
Not everything went right.
He appeared in projects that flew under the radar at the box office, such as Dirty Lies in 2016. Despite the setbacks, Young kept a steady work ethic in television. In 2023 he joined the cast of The Bear as Justin. In this FX production, he again showed that his strength lies in fitting into ensemble casts without forcing himself to stand out.
In 2024, his schedule included a role in the series The Idol. The project sparked a huge controversy over its content and the changes in directing during production. Mark L. Young wrapped up filming in California under a strict confidentiality agreement that limited any public statements about the shoot.
