Lana Condor was born in Vietnam and arrived in Chicago when she was just four months old, after being adopted by an American couple. Her training didn't start in front of a film camera but on the stage of a classical dance academy. She studied ballet in New York with an almost military discipline that she would later bring to her long filming days.
In 2016, she landed her first professional role in a Marvel blockbuster. She played Jubilee in X-Men: Apocalypse. But the result in the editing room was disappointing for her fans, since most of her scenes ended up cut from the final film.
The industry is fickle.
In 2018, the project came along that pulled her out of total obscurity and made her a global face. Netflix released To All the Boys I've Loved Before, and the impact was immediate. Her Instagram profile gained five million followers in just one week after the movie's release.
That success tied her to a trilogy that wrapped up between 2020 and 2021. But Condor didn't want to be just the sweet face of teen romantic comedies. So in 2019 she took a role in Assassination Nation, trading her school uniform for a katana and a much darker, more violent character.
And the bet paid off with critics.
The series was canceled after a single season due to a lack of funding. That didn't slow her corporate ambitions, and she decided to launch her own production company. In 2022, she served as executive producer of the miniseries Boo's Challenge to ensure her voice carried weight in casting and script decisions.
The road hasn't always been smooth. In 2023, she lent her voice to the DreamWorks film Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken. The movie had a production budget of $70 million and barely managed to gross $45 million at theaters worldwide.
She took part in the filming of Coyote vs. Acme alongside John Cena. This Warner Bros. production had an unusual fate in 2024 when the studio decided to shelve it permanently for tax reasons, even though it was finished. Executives preferred the tax write-off over a commercial release.
In 2024, she filmed The Last Showgirl under the direction of Gia Coppola. She shares the cast with Pamela Anderson and Jamie Lee Curtis in this film set in a decaying Las Vegas. The production wrapped in just 18 days on a low independent film budget.
