Madeleine Arthur is no newcomer to the Canadian industry. Born in Vancouver in 1997, she spent thirteen years of her life in artistic gymnastics before deciding her place was in front of a camera. That physical training gave her a body control that she applied to her first television roles.
In 2014, she landed the role of Jane Keane in the film Big Eyes. Working under the direction of Tim Burton was an accelerated lesson in managing silence on screen. She shared scenes with Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz on a shoot that demanded absolute restraint to convey the tension of a family torn apart by artistic fraud.
It was her first real contact with the top tier of the industry.
But the Canadian market soon became too small for her. Arthur speaks French fluently thanks to her education in French immersion schools, which opened the door to projects with a different sensibility. In 2015, she appeared in the series The Magicians and soon after joined the cast of The Family for ABC.
The To All the Boys I've Loved Before trilogy changed her international profile between 2018 and 2021. She played Christine, the lead's best friend, with a lighthearted tone that contrasted with the seriousness of her earlier work. That Netflix production reached eighty million views in its first weeks on the platform.
And the gamble paid off.
After the success of the young adult saga, she appeared in Snowpiercer during 2020. In this television adaptation of the work by Bong Joon-ho, she played Nicolette Beaumont in a claustrophobic science fiction setting. Filming in Vancouver let her return to her geographic roots while exploring a much darker and grittier range than in her romantic comedies.
In 2022, she took on the challenge of starring in Devil in Ohio. The role of Mae Dodd required an unsettling fragility that set her apart from any previous label. The story follows a young woman who escapes a cult, and Arthur had to work through the psychology of trauma so the character would feel believable without tipping into melodrama.
She recorded eight episodes that topped the ratings charts for weeks.
That same year, she tried to make the leap into sitcoms with Blockbuster. The series centered on the last video store of the famous chain, and she played Hannah, an employee struggling financially. The project failed to win over audiences, and the platform decided to cancel it after airing its only season of ten episodes.
The series disappeared from the catalog without warning.
In 2024, she joined the cast of the film The Last Showgirl, directed by Gia Coppola. Filmed in Las Vegas, the movie featured her alongside Pamela Anderson and Jamie Lee Curtis. The production focused on the decline of traditional live entertainment compared with newer forms of digital entertainment and premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival with a running time of exactly 100 minutes.
