Leslie Hope died on television on May 22, 2002. It was a sharp gunshot in the final episode of the first season of 24. Millions of viewers watched Jack Bauer cradle his wife's lifeless body as the digital clock marked the end of the longest day of his life.
That scene was a collective trauma for the show's fans. But for the Halifax-born actress, in 1965 it meant freedom from a contract that would have tied her to a supporting role for years. Hope never wanted to be just the hero's wife.
In 1983 she made her film debut in Ups & Downs while finishing her studies in Victoria, British Columbia. That shoot in Calgary taught her that acting was a craft of endurance rather than a pursuit of fame. Shortly after, she moved to Los Angeles to work on Knots Landing.
Her big break in art-house cinema came in 1988 with Talk Radio. Oliver Stone cast her as Laura in a claustrophobic, violent film. That role alongside Eric Bogosian was her first trial by fire in a high-profile production where the script mattered more than the style.
Then came a relative silence.
Throughout the 1990s she worked steadily in television and independent films. She appeared in Party of Five and Chicago Hope without making much noise. And it was precisely that low profile that let her move from one project to another without being typecast in any particular genre.
In the mid-2000s she began looking beyond the camera. She directed the documentary What I See When I Close My Eyes in 2008, about the lives of street children in Cambodia. She wasn't chasing easy applause but a way of telling stories that didn't depend on her own face.
Her move into narrative directing was methodical. In 2012 she directed episodes of Murdoch Mysteries, and soon networks began entrusting her with chapters of action and science fiction series. She directed episodes of Van Helsing and Ghost Wars, showing she handled technical pacing with the same precision as dialogue.
And the industry took notice.
In 2019 she took over directing duties on Netflix's Lost in Space, and in 2021 she worked on the production of Snowpiercer. Her style on set is direct and free of unnecessary frills. Hope prefers order from the technical crew to the uncertainty of actors waiting for their turn in the trailer.
She played President Michelle Travers in The Night Agent in 2023. It was a politically authoritative role that demanded absolute coldness in front of the camera. But her main interest remained in the director's chair rather than in the makeup trailer.
In 2025 her involvement as a director for the second season of The Last of Us for HBO was announced. It is one of the most expensive productions of the decade. Filming these episodes in Vancouver required a massive technical effort, with budgets exceeding ten million dollars per episode.
