James Eckhouse dropped out of biology classes at MIT because acting appealed to him more than lab test tubes. It was a risky decision that took him out of elite laboratories and onto Broadway stages in the late seventies. He wasn't chasing mass fame when he moved to New York. He just wanted to work.
And the gamble paid off.
In 1990, he got the call that would change his bank account and his anonymity forever. He was offered the role of Jim Walsh in Beverly Hills, 90210. He was only thirty-five and already playing the father of two teenagers on screen. That contract gave him a financial security that few actors of his generation managed to achieve.
For five seasons, he was the moral anchor of a series that moved between California luxury and teen drama. He filmed a total of 143 episodes as the patriarch of the Walsh family. But Eckhouse didn't want to limit himself to reciting responsible-father lines on camera while the young cast grabbed the headlines.
He started taking an interest in what went on behind the camera.
In 1993, he made his directing debut on the episode titled Fire and Ice. He developed a taste for running the set and repeated the experience on two more episodes before leaving the production in 1995. He was looking for new challenges because being typecast was becoming a real threat to his film career.
He left the series of his own accord.
After leaving the most famous ZIP code on television, he focused on character acting. He's one of those faces viewers recognize but whose name they don't always remember right away. In 2012, he appeared in The Avengers, playing a senator caught up in the chaos of Marvel's superheroes.
His name appears in the credits of major series such as The Good Wife, Southland, and Major Crimes. He has never been short of work in the American industry because his serious, reliable screen presence works in any casting office. He's an actor who prefers technical reliability to fleeting red-carpet stardom.
In 2021, he appeared in the Netflix series The Chair, playing Professor Jeff Larson. That same year, he joined the cast of Being the Ricardos under the direction of Aaron Sorkin. Sorkin is a demanding director who only works with actors capable of keeping up with frantic dialogue rhythms.
He has lived in Los Angeles with his wife, Sheila Kelleher Walsh, for decades. Their two children have also tried their luck in show business. James Eckhouse still collects residuals from reruns of his early work while choosing independent theater projects in California.
The final episode he directed during his peak popularity was P.S. I Love You in 1995.
