Kacey Rohl grew up among film sets and scripts corrected by hand in Vancouver. Their father directed television episodes and their mother wrote for the theater. It was inevitable that they would end up in front of a camera before turning twenty. But they didn't do it out of family inertia.
In 2010 they landed a small role in the remake of V. It was a modest start.
Soon after came The Killing. There they played Sterling Fitch and showed a gaze capable of holding the frame without saying a word. Because at home they learned that acting is not about shouting but about knowing how to listen to your scene partner.
The Canadian industry is small.
Bryan Fuller called them for Hannibal in 2013 because they needed someone who could embody fear and complicity at the same time. Their Abigail Hobbs was not a conventional victim. They had to play moral ambiguity opposite a Mads Mikkelsen who filled every inch of the physical space.
And it worked because Rohl understands silence.
For three seasons they sustained a suffocating tension that pulled them out of the circuit of supporting actresses. Specialist critics began to highlight their ability to project a dangerous fragility on screen. They didn't need grand artifice to be unsettling.
In 2016, she made the leap to The Magicians. Her character, Marina Andrieski, was the complete opposite of her previous roles. She was a sharp-tongued, cynical woman with absolute control over her magical surroundings. But Rohl gave her a layer of humanity that was not originally written in Lev Grossman's books.
In 2019 they starred in White Lie. They played a student who fakes having cancer to raise money and maintain her social standing. It's an uncomfortable film to watch. So the weight of the movie rested entirely on their ability not to come across as hateful to the viewer.
It demanded absolute control of one's nerves.
Under the direction of Yonah Lewis and Calvin Thomas, she was on screen for ninety percent of the footage. For this role, she earned a nomination at the Canadian Screen Awards for Best Actress in a Leading Role. This was the moment she stopped being the genre-series girl and began leading author-driven projects.
But Rohl didn't seek an immediate leap to the major studios in Los Angeles. They preferred to stay in politically charged productions such as Fortunate Son in 2020. There they played an activist during the Vietnam War era.
In 2023, she joined the cast of V.C. Andrews' Dawn, playing Sally Ormand. It was a period drama that required a different kind of restraint. For The Listeners in 2024, she worked under director Janicza Bravo. The story explores an auditory phenomenon that alters the protagonists' perception of reality.
Filming took place mainly on location in the United Kingdom.
The production had an estimated budget of 15 million pounds.
