Jamie Lee Curtis never asked permission to enter the movies.
She was 19 years old when John Carpenter held a knife to her neck in 1978. She was not just the daughter of Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis. She was a physical presence who filled the frame of Halloween with a mix of vulnerability and raw strength.
Filming of that movie lasted just twenty days. That independent production changed the way commercial horror was understood. But Curtis was soon trapped in the role of professional victim. In 1980 she made The Fog, Prom Night and Terror Train back to back. Audiences just wanted to see her scream.
And the risk was worth it.
In 1983 came Trading Places. Director John Landis asked her to take her clothes off, and she agreed because she understood that's how the business worked. That role as a prostitute with a plan of her own showed she had impeccable comic timing.
That film broke the stigma of the genre actress. In 1988 she made A Fish Called Wanda, and the industry realized Curtis could carry a farcical comedy without breaking a sweat. Her gift for dry humor moved her definitively away from masked killers and dark hallways.
James Cameron called her for True Lies in 1994. The dance she performs opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger was rehearsed for weeks. She herself decided that her character should not be a perfect beauty. She wanted her to look like a real woman overwhelmed by the circumstances of international espionage.
But behind the cameras, the reality was different.
Curtis battled an opioid addiction for ten years after minor cosmetic surgery. In 1999 she decided to completely clean up her life. That sobriety journey defines her maturity far more than any golden statuette won on stage.
She spent a long time away from the spotlight to focus on her family and writing children's books. In 2018 she returned to the franchise that launched her career with a new Halloween trilogy. Her fee for that first installment was significantly higher than the 8,000 dollars she earned for the original film.
In 2023 she won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Her portrayal of Deirdre Beaubeirdre was an exercise in physical honesty. Curtis refused to have her stomach retouched in post-production. She wanted every fold of her skin to tell a story of bureaucratic exhaustion and the passage of real time.
In 2025 she returned to the Disney universe to film the sequel Freakier Friday alongside Lindsay Lohan. The production was announced after years of requests from fans of the original 2003 film. Principal photography for this second part took place in Los Angeles with a budget managed by Walt Disney Pictures.
