Ben Cotton was born in Edmonton in 1975 and realized early that film in Canada isn't about red carpets but about physical endurance. His first credited appearance came in 2002 in the miniseries Taken. It was a modest start, but it set the pace of industrial work that would define his career.
He has more than 150 credits on his professional profile.
He's a supporting actor by definition. But his physical presence (that chiseled jaw and a gaze that shifts between menacing and fatherly) let him move from low-budget procedurals to top-tier sci-fi productions. For years he was the go-to name for casting directors shooting in British Columbia who didn't need big tricks.
In 2008 he played Dr. Kavanagh in Stargate Atlantis. It was a recurring role that gave him visibility with the niche audience of cable TV. But Cotton never settled into fan convention circuits. He moved on to Hell on Wheels in 2011, making it clear that mud and the Western suited him better than the clean corridors of a spaceship.
And the change of pace saved his career.
He worked on Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome for 2012, playing Coker Fasjovik. He struck a tricky balance there between the cynicism of a veteran and the vulnerability of a soldier who knows he's going to die soon. He wasn't chasing easy applause, but he delivered the technical job of giving human weight to a script overloaded with digital effects.
The arrival of big-budget studio productions in Vancouver gave his career a second wind. In 2023 he joined The Night Agent, playing Wick. It's a supporting role that carries much of the political tension of the plot with the economy of gesture that only actors with twenty years in front of the camera have.
That same 2023, he appeared in the HBO adaptation of The Last of Us.
He played a FEDRA guard in the season's first episode. It was a brief but necessary appearance that set the tone of military oppression the story demanded from the start. Cotton knows there are no small parts when the production has budgets that exceed $10 million per episode.
In 2024 he joined the cast of Resident Alien, bringing to life a government agent. There's no sign of burnout in his work from 2024. He keeps up an average of five projects a year across independent films and mainstream television. Filming for his role in Wild Cards wrapped in the first quarter of 2024, on a schedule of fourteen-hour days.
