Synopsis of Fire Country

Bode Donovan-Leone is a young man with a criminal record who wants to turn his life around and cut his sentence short. To do so, he signs up for a program in which inmates work with California's forestry and fire protection department, known as Cal Fire. However, his assignment takes him back to Edgewater, the town where he grew up and left behind long ago. There, he will work alongside old friends, fellow inmates and elite firefighters to put out massive wildfires ravaging the region. His goal is to prove he can change, but going back means facing what he left behind. The series airs on CBS and stars Max Thieriot, who created it with Tony Phelan and Joan Rater.

Trivia about Fire Country

The series was called Cal Fire during its development phase, when CBS announced in November 2021 that it was working on it with Max Thieriot.

Ahead of the premiere, Cal Fire chief Joe Tyler issued a statement denying any involvement in the creation of the series.

The president of the Cal Fire union, Tim Edwards, said they could not stop the series from airing or from using the agency's name.

Showrunner Tia Napolitano responded to the criticism by defending the series as entertainment programming and not a documentary.

The show spawned the spin-off Sheriff Country, which was shot in Toronto instead of Vancouver so that Morena Baccarin could be closer to her family in New York.

Jelly Roll guest stars in Season 3 as Noah, a former inmate who now works in the health care sector.

CBS renewed "Fire Country" for a fifth season in January 2026, before the fourth season had ended, and the new season will have 13 episodes, compared with 20 in the previous season.

Tia Napolitano will step down as showrunner after the fourth season to focus on her own projects included in her development deal with CBS Studios.
