Synopsis of Midnight Mass

Riley Flynn returns to Crockett Island, an isolated fishing community, after serving four years in prison for killing someone in a drunk-driving accident. He wants to rebuild his life in the place where he grew up, although his father is reluctant to take him back and Erin, his former girlfriend, is expecting a child. At the same time, a charismatic and mysterious priest arrives on the island: Father Paul Hill, who temporarily replaces the aging Monsignor Pruitt at St. Patrick's Church. His actions rekindle a faith that had been fading among the locals, but the community's divisions deepen with each one. Meanwhile, unexplained events begin to occur in town. The series, created by Mike Flanagan for Netflix, stars Zach Gilford, Kate Siegel and Hamish Linklater.

Trivia about Midnight Mass

Flanagan drew on Tangier, Virginia, as the inspiration for the fictional island of Crockett Island.

The production ruled out filming on a real island due to the logistical challenges of transporting and housing the crew, so it built the village in Garry Point Park, near Vancouver.

The church sequence in the sixth episode required 103 camera setups and six days of filming, with about 200 candles lit repeatedly between shots.

Director of photography Michael Fimognari assigned the camera crews the colors red, green and blue instead of the letters A, B and C.

Linklater cited Raúl Juliá's performance in the film Romero (1989) as one of his influences for bringing Father Paul to life.

A prop copy of the fictional novel from Hush (2016) appears as a nod in Gerald's Game (2017), another Flanagan film.

Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times called it "the best Stephen King story that Stephen King never wrote."

"Midnight Mass" drew 1,171 million minutes viewed in the United States between September 27 and October 3, 2021, according to Nielsen measurements.
