Trivia about Below

McKeown drew inspiration from real marine biologist Annie Mercier to create the character of Fonda Howander, played by Mackenzie Davis.

Much of the filming took place in Brigus South, where existing houses were adapted to look like other buildings, such as a church and a fish processing plant.

The song "The Passenger" by Siouxsie and the Banshees appears in the series finale.

Rotten Tomatoes gives the series a 87% approval rating, based on 45 critic reviews.

"Below" drew 17 million views in its first few days and became Netflix's most-watched Canadian debut; it also hit No. 1 in 53 countries and entered the top 10 in 90.

The series was shot over 75 days in various locations across Newfoundland and Labrador, with more than 700 lead crew members, 425 daily hires and extras, and more than 650 Canadian suppliers.

"Below" had its world premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival before arriving on Netflix.

Jesse McKeown developed the project for roughly 18 years before turning it into a six-episode miniseries.
