Joshua Close was born in Oakville in 1981, and his face was being talked about in casting offices long before the general public knew his name. He isn't the typical poster-perfect leading man. His screen presence has always carried something unsettling and restrained that works better at the edges of the frame than under the main spotlight.
In 2002 he made his debut alongside Harrison Ford in K-19: The Widowmaker. It was a trial by fire in a massive production that taught him to hold his own among giants. But the real breakthrough came when television casting directors discovered that his look worked just as well in historical dramas as in psychological thrillers.
The industry took notice of his intense gaze.
In 2010, he played Edward Sledge in the miniseries The Pacific. That role required him to explore the trauma of war through absolute restraint. It was a physical and mental performance that moved him away from youthful roles and into a much more mature league. And he did it without raising his voice.
Close didn't just wait for calls from his agent. For years he cultivated a writing side that few people outside the Los Angeles production circles knew about. In 2017 he wrote the script for the episode The Apothecary of the series The Blacklist and also appeared as an actor in the storyline. This duality allowed him to understand the mechanics of suspense from the inside of the role.
And the gamble paid off.
His appearance in the first season of Fargo in 2014 as Chazz Nygaard was a turning point in the media. He played the protagonist's successful and cruel brother. In that FX production he showed he could be despicable with just a couple of cutting lines. Close really does know how to say a lot with very little dialogue.
Before shooting The Master in 2012, he had already worked with directors of the caliber of George A. Romero on Diary of the Dead over 2007. That ability to move from dense auteur cinema to pure horror defines his career. He has never chased fame for its own sake, but rather the project that lets him disappear into the character.
Martin Scorsese's casting for Killers of the Flower Moon in 2023 confirmed his standing in the industry. In this film he played Horace Burkhart and shared the set with Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro. It was a complex shoot in Oklahoma, where historical accuracy demanded precision down to every gesture.
That year was key to his international visibility.
In 2022 he appeared in Monica (a production that premiered at the Venice Film Festival), proving that independent cinema remains his favorite haven. He is an actor who prefers long silences and heavy atmospheres. So his name often shows up in projects where the character's psychology matters more than visual spectacle.
Joshua Close lives in Los Angeles and keeps a low profile, staying away from the industry's social events. His professional focus is on the craft of acting and writing original screenplays. By 2023, the actor had more than 50 credits in top-tier film and television productions.
