United States, 1950s. Freddie Quell, a World War II veteran, struggles to readjust to a postwar society that has already moved on. His erratic behavior and alcoholism complicate every attempt to live a normal life. When he crosses paths with Lancaster Dodd, leader of a philosophical movement called The Cause, Dodd sees something in him that interests him and takes him into his ranks. The movement promises answers to those who carry the weight of the past, and Freddie approaches it hoping to find a place where he belongs. Paul Thomas Anderson wrote and directed the film, which stars Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

[to Clark] I was on a ship that got 13 battle stars and won the war. What'd you do, dummy?
This is something you do for a billion years or not at all. This isn't fashion.
[about Lancaster Dodd] He's making all of this up as he goes along. You don't see that?
