Jesse Plemons was born in Dallas in 1988, and by age two he was already in front of a camera for a soft drink ad. His family lived in a small town in Texas, far from the movie business, but the boy had a strange stillness that worked on screen. He was not the typical child actor with a plastic smile.
In 2006 he landed the role of Landry Clarke in Friday Night Lights. That series about American football gave him the chance to build a supporting character who gradually gained weight next to the square-jawed athletes. Plemons never needed to shout for viewers to notice him.
And then the darkness came.
His arrival in the fifth season of Breaking Bad in 2012 changed how the industry saw his physique. He played Todd Alquist, a polite young man who could kill a child without blinking or changing the tone of his voice. That absolute coldness became his best tool as an actor.
Many actors get stuck in the success of a television series, but Plemons used that momentum to seek out directors with a very specific vision. In 2012 he worked with Paul Thomas Anderson on The Master. It was a small role, but enough for Hollywood's biggest names to realize that this round-faced Texan had a volcano inside him.
He took on roles other actors would have turned down for fear of being pushed into the background. In 2015 he joined the second season of Fargo, where he gained a considerable amount of weight to play a butcher overwhelmed by circumstances. There he met Kirsten Dunst, his partner ever since, with whom he would go on to work again on projects with suffocating dramatic weight.
But movies were asking for something else.
His ability to fill the frame without barely moving won over Martin Scorsese. The director cast him in The Irishman in 2019 and reunited with him in 2023 for Killers of the Flower Moon. In the latter film, Plemons plays Tom White, an FBI agent who arrives in Oklahoma to investigate a series of brutal crimes. His presence is the moral anchor of a story steeped in violence and greed.
In 2021 he earned his first Oscar nomination for The Power of the Dog by Jane Campion. In the film he plays George Burbank, a man trying to maintain decency in a toxic, untamed family environment. Plemons builds his performance on glances and on the timing of silences, something very few actors of his generation handle with such precision.
The collaboration with Yorgos Lanthimos in 2024 on Kinds of Kindness marked another technical shift. In this project he plays three different characters in an anthology structure that required him to work with narrative rhythms far removed from the naturalism of his early work. He won the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival for this role.
And the gamble paid off.
Plemons avoids red carpets and prefers a quiet life on his ranch. He has no social media and doesn't chase cheap applause from the mass audience. His strategy is to read scripts obsessively and choose those where silence says more than dialogue. In 2024 his fee per project already exceeded five million dollars in mid-budget productions.
