Kirsten Dunst was eleven years old when she kissed an adult on a set in New Orleans. It happened in 1994 during filming of Interview with the Vampire, and that moment earned her a Golden Globe nomination. She was not a typical child prodigy, because her gaze projected a maturity that often unsettled casting directors.
Before turning eighteen, she had already accumulated more work hours than most veteran Hollywood supporting actors. She took part in Jumanji and Little Women while trying to live a normal school life in Los Angeles. But normality didn't last long.
And the money came with the colorful tights.
In 2002, she accepted the role of Mary Jane Watson in Spider-Man. The trilogy directed by Sam Raimi grossed more than 2,500 million dollars worldwide and placed her at the center of the commercial film industry. That experience gave her enough financial freedom to start choosing projects purely on artistic instinct.
Her partnership with Sofia Coppola began in 1999 with The Virgin Suicides. That film defined a generational aesthetic that is still imitated on social media today. In 2006, they reunited for Marie Antoinette (a 40 million dollar production), which was booed at the Cannes Film Festival before becoming a cult classic.
Because Dunst always preferred shoots where the script mattered more than the studio's paycheck. So she sought refuge in European cinema and in projects that tested her mental health.
In 2011 she won international recognition in Denmark. Lars von Trier gave her the lead role in Melancholia after Penélope Cruz unexpectedly left the project. Dunst won the Best Actress award at Cannes for playing a woman who embraces the end of the world with chilling calm.
Real depression helped shape the character.
After that success, the industry stopped seeing her as the superhero's girlfriend and began treating her as a character actress. But she chose to step away from the spotlight for long stretches (necessary breaks to recover from the pressure of early stardom).
In 2015, she made her television debut with the second season of Fargo. She played Peggy Blumquist and showed that her gift for dark comedy was far sharper than expected. There she met Jesse Plemons (her current partner) and began a phase of much more introspective and physically demanding roles.
By 2021, critics recognized her talent in The Power of the Dog. Directed by Jane Campion, she earned her first Oscar nomination playing an alcoholic woman in a hostile environment. The film was shot in New Zealand under strict isolation protocols.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2024 she starred in Civil War directed by Alex Garland. Her role as a war photographer weary of everything mirrors her own on-screen journey. A24's production had a budget of $50 million and became the studio's most expensive release up to that point.
