The craftsman of the impossible angle

Sam Raimi didn't ask for permission to break into the film industry. In 1979, he headed into the woods of Tennessee with a group of friends and a 16mm camera. They had a tiny budget and plenty of fake blood made with corn syrup.

The result was The Evil Dead. That 1981 film didn't just scare audiences at European festivals. Stephen King called it the most original horror movie of the year, and that gave it the final push toward commercial distribution.

Raimi invented the shaky camera technique by mounting the rig on a wooden plank. He ran through the woods to simulate the point of view of an invisible demon because he couldn't afford a professional crane. It was pure ingenuity in the face of a lack of cash.

And the invention worked.

But the director didn't want to stay trapped in the forest cabin forever. In 1990, he directed Darkman because he failed to secure the rights to The Shadow or The Batman. He created his own disfigured, dark superhero with a visual style reminiscent of the most aggressive comic books.

In 1998, he proved he could handle icy suspense with A Simple Plan. It's a dry film about greed that steps away from his usual frenzied camera movements. The project earned two Academy Award nominations and changed how Hollywood viewed his storytelling ability.

The man who understood the mallet

The industry changed in 2002 when Sony entrusted him with $140 million for Spider-Man. Raimi understood that Peter Parker mattered far more than the latex suit. The original trilogy grossed more than $2,500 million at box offices around the world.

Filming Spider-Man 3 in 2007 was chaotic due to interference from studio executives. Raimi wanted to use the Vulture as the villain, but he was forced to include Venom at the last minute. The final result left him with a bitter taste and canceled the planned fourth installment for 2011.

He returned to his roots to wash away the bad taste.

In 2009, he released Drag Me to Hell. It's a rollercoaster of gross-out scares and laughs that revived the spirit of his early days in low-budget filmmaking. Critics applauded this unapologetic return to visceral horror after years of working on big studio productions.

Several years of silence as a feature film director passed until, in 2022, Marvel called him to direct Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. He brought zombies and horror elements to a franchise that tends to be bright and family-friendly. It was his return to superhero movies after fifteen years away.

As a producer, he has kept his Ghost House Pictures brand alive to support new genre talent. In 2023, he backed the release of Evil Dead Rise under the direction of Lee Cronin. The franchise keeps generating profits without him having to be physically behind the camera on every shoot.

The total budget of his first film was 375,000 dollars.
