John Goodman arrived in New York in 1975 with barely a thousand dollars in his pocket and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree under his arm. He had no connections and no look that fit the aesthetic standards of the era. But he had a voice that echoed off the walls of the small theaters where he began to make a living.
Before becoming a familiar face, he worked as a nightclub bouncer and filmed TV commercials to pay the rent. His promising football career at college was cut short by a knee injury. That accident changed his destiny. Had that knee not been broken, Goodman might never have sought refuge in the drama department at Missouri State University.
His body was both his tool and his burden.
In 1988 American television discovered Dan Conner in the series Roseanne. The role brought him worldwide fame and a financial stability he had never imagined. Audiences saw in him the hardworking, rough-around-the-edges family man with an enormous heart. Yet Goodman always sought something darker beneath that layer of TV goodwill.
His professional relationship with Joel and Ethan Coen began in 1987 with Arizona Baby. It was no simple job for hire. The directors found in him an actor capable of moving from the most absurd physical comedy to latent violence in a matter of seconds.
In 1991 he filmed Barton Fink and showed he could unsettle viewers with a single sweaty stare. His character, Charlie Meadows, is a study of the madness hidden within normalcy. The Coens knew how to exploit his physical presence to create constant tension on screen.
The industry quickly typecast him.
But he broke that mold in 1998 with The Big Lebowski. His performance as Walter Sobchak is an exercise in rhythm and verbal aggression that is still studied in film schools. Goodman didn't improvise. He followed the Coens' script meticulously so that every insult and every shout carried exactly the right weight.
The passing years brought health problems and a public battle with alcoholism, which the actor said he overcame in 2007. For decades his weight was a constant concern for the big studios' insurers. In 2010 he decided to radically change his lifestyle and began a weight-loss process that dramatically transformed his appearance.
His looks changed the roles he was offered. In 2012 he appeared in Argo and The Artist. Both films won the Oscar for Best Picture in consecutive years. Goodman became a good-luck charm for Hollywood's big productions. His ability to steal scenes with barely five minutes of screen time is one of his greatest technical strengths.
And the gamble on risk paid off.
In 2019, he joined the project The Righteous Gemstones for the HBO network. In the series, he plays the patriarch of a family of corrupt televangelists. The role lets him blend the authority of a man in his seventies with the vulnerability of someone who knows his time is running out.
The series filmed its third season in 2023 in locations in South Carolina. The production hired more than two hundred extras for the religious ceremony scenes in the megatemple. Goodman shot most of his sequences during twelve-hour days under suffocating heat.
