Synopsis of Damages

Damages is a legal drama created by Daniel Zelman and brothers Glenn and Todd A. Kessler, airing on FX and Audience Network. Set in New York, it follows Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne), a newly graduated lawyer who receives job offers from law firms. Ellen turns down a position with prosecutor Hollis Nye to join the team of Patty Hewes (Glenn Close), a powerful litigator who goes after corrupt players with a very personal moral code. Patty takes Ellen under her wing and throws her into her most important case: a class action lawsuit brought by former employees against billionaire Arthur Frobisher (Ted Danson), accused of lying about the state of his company while selling his shares. Ellen wants to prove her talent, but soon wonders how far she is willing to go and whether she will end up becoming like her mentor.

Trivia about Damages

British actress Anastasia Griffith convinced the producers to let her play an American, speaking with an American accent throughout an entire follow-up meeting.

The series premiere drew 3.7 million viewers and, with a repeat that same night, reached 5.1 million, becoming the most-watched cable program of the night.

The third season premiered on January 25, 2010, drawing just 1,483 million viewers, and its finale dropped to 960,000.

Glenn Close accepted the role after a three-hour meeting with the creators, impressed above all by the strength of the character.

The creators chose Ted Danson to play Arthur Frobisher because of his role in The Onion Field (1979).

Lily Tomlin met Todd A. Kessler at an art exhibition and pried information out of him about upcoming twists in the series, which led to her being cast as Marilyn Tobin.

Glenn Close and Željko Ivanek each won Emmy Awards in 2008, and the series also won the Emmy for Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series.
