Synopsis of Hell on Wheels

In 1865, shortly after the end of the American Civil War, Cullen Bohannon, a former Confederate soldier, arrives in the West with a double purpose. He wants to work on building the First Transcontinental Railroad in the United States, which the Union Pacific Railroad is laying westward, and he is searching for the Union soldiers who murdered his wife. Bohannon settles in Hell on Wheels, a traveling camp in Nebraska that moves at the pace of the tracks and gathers laborers, mercenaries, prostitutes and surveyors. There he is put in charge of a crew of workers, while tycoon Thomas Durant pursues his fortune and tension builds with every stretch of track. Created by Joe and Tony Gayton and aired on AMC, the series follows Anson Mount in this struggle between revenge and the future rising over the plains.

Trivia about Hell on Wheels

Joe Gayton remembered an American Experience documentary and, upon hearing about Hell on Wheels, thought it was the perfect setting for a Western.
The pilot drew 4.4 million viewers, the second-biggest series premiere on AMC, behind The Walking Dead.
Exteriors for the first season were filmed mostly on the T'suu T'ina Indian Reserve, in southern Alberta.
The fifth season was shot at the CL Ranch, west of Calgary, and the Kananaskis park, 40 miles away, stood in for the Sierra Nevada.
Filming of the third season was halted midway through episode six, when the location fell within a mandatory flood evacuation zone.
AMC renewed Hell on Wheels for a final fifth season, whose premiere was split into two parts to close out the series.
The series was criticized for failing to portray Chinese immigrants during the scenes about building the transcontinental railroad.
In 2015, it received the Western Heritage Award for Best Dramatic Television Series.
