Synopsis of American Primeval

In 1857, during the Utah War, the series opens with the Mountain Meadows Massacre. Mormon militias, allied with the Paiute, kill around 120 Arkansas settlers who were trying to reach California. From that episode on, the story follows a single mother and her son, who are trying to reach their father, who has settled on the other side of the Rocky Mountains. Their journey takes them through a territory marked by anti-Mormon sentiment, where clashes between factions and distrust of outsiders complicate every stage of the trip. Created by Mark L. Smith and directed by Peter Berg, the miniseries streams on Netflix and stars Betty Gilpin and Taylor Kitsch.

Trivia about American Primeval

Peter Berg began looking into the subject after reading about the Utah War and the Mountain Meadows Massacre, an event the series covers in its first episode.

Filming for the series lasted 130 days, only two of which were shot on indoor sets.

The set builders used only tools available in the 19th century to construct their version of Fort Bridger, the trading post where much of the action takes place.

Taylor Kitsch fractured a foot during production of the series, which was filmed in New Mexico.

The series' music is handled by post-rock band Explosions in the Sky, who had previously worked with Peter Berg on Friday Night Lights and Lone Survivor.

The series has amassed 24.7 million views since its premiere and reached No. 1 on Netflix's weekly chart with 14.3 million between January 13 and 19, 2025.

"American Primeval" spent four weeks in Netflix's global Top 10 for English TV series and recorded 35.1 million views.

The SAG-AFTRA strike halted production for five months; during that pause, Preston Mota grew about eight centimeters, his voice changed, and he began to grow facial hair.
