Betty Gilpin is not your typical Hollywood blonde. She grew up backstage, watching her parents act on New York stages, and that gave her an almost cynical view of the craft. For a decade, she was limited to supporting roles in procedural television series, where she often played the victim or the forgettable girlfriend.
For years, she bounced from audition to audition, with no one seeing more in her than a conventional face for medical dramas. But inside, Gilpin cultivated a strangeness that didn't fit the standards of the time.
Television didn't know what to do with her.
In 2017, she landed the role of Debbie Eagan in the series GLOW. Playing a housewife who becomes a professional wrestler let her channel a pent-up rage that the industry didn't know where to place. The Netflix production earned her three Emmy nominations and permanently pulled her out of technical anonymity.
And the gamble paid off.
Gilpin used the character Liberty Belle to poke fun at female archetypes while performing real wrestling holds. On that shoot, she learned that her body was a narrative tool as powerful as her voice. Her ability to switch between emotional fragility and physical violence put her in a privileged position within the industry.
In 2020, she starred in The Hunt. The film was delayed by political controversy in the United States, but it allowed Gilpin to show her leading presence in action cinema. She played Crystal, a war veteran who barely speaks and moves with the precision of a mechanical predator.
Writing was her other way of screaming.
In 2022, she published her first essay collection, titled All the Women in My Brain. In its pages, she dissected the anxiety of being a woman in an industry obsessed with youth and aesthetic perfection. The book confirmed that her intelligence matched her acting talent and that she had no intention of following the traditional rules of the game.
In 2023, she led the cast of Mrs. Davis, playing a nun who battles an all-powerful artificial intelligence. It was a complex project that blended religion with cutting-edge technology and demanded an acting tone that was almost impossible to sustain. Gilpin performed many of her own action scenes without stunt doubles in the most physically risky sequences.
In 2024, she joined the series Three Women to explore the complexities of female desire from a dramatic perspective. The production focused on the psychological depth of the characters and avoided the visual gimmicks of her earlier work.
In 2025, she joined the filming of the historical miniseries Death by Lightning to bring Frances Cleveland to life.
