Synopsis of American Gods

Shadow Moon is an ex-convict just released from prison, where he was serving time for robbing a casino. When he is informed that his wife, Laura, has died in a car accident, he is granted early release to attend her funeral. Along the way, he crosses paths with Mr. Wednesday, a mysterious man who seems to know a great deal about his life and past. Soon, Shadow discovers a hidden world where magic is real. There, the Old Gods fear being forgotten in the face of the growing power of the New Gods, including Technology and Media. Wednesday plans to rally the Old Gods to defend their existence, and Shadow must decide what role he will play in this conflict. The series, created by Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, airs on Starz and stars Ricky Whittle and Ian McShane.

Trivia about American Gods

Fuller wanted the Old Gods to look sandy and rustic, to show how worn down their faith had become.

In December 2019, Orlando Jones stated that they had been fired from American Gods in September.

New episodes premiered on Sundays on the Starz app in the United States and were available internationally on Amazon Video the following day.

The series, especially its first season, received two Primetime Emmy nominations: for Outstanding Main Title Design and Outstanding Special Visual Effects.

Starz canceled the series in March 2021 after three seasons, although a miniseries or a closing movie to conclude the story was considered.

Bryan Fuller and Michael Green left the production after the first season over creative differences related to the budget; Gillian Anderson and Kristin Chenoweth later left the series.

Jesse Alexander replaced Fuller and Green as showrunner for the second season, but was removed during filming after production problems, delays and script rewrites.

The third season saw a 65% drop in viewership compared to the first, according to data from several platforms cited in reports about the cancellation.
