Emily Browning was ten years old when an agent saw her in a school performance in Melbourne. Her father didn't want her to act, but she insisted until she landed her first role in the TV movie The Echo of Thunder in 1998. That shoot marked the start of a career that has always avoided the most obvious path to stardom.
In 2004, the release of Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events put her in the global spotlight. Jim Carrey personally chose her to play Violet Baudelaire after seeing her video audition. The film grossed $211 million, and the industry expected her to accept any commercial project to capitalize on the momentum.
But Browning decided to return to Australia to finish high school. During that time, she turned down the audition for the role of Bella Swan in the Twilight saga because she had no interest in signing a contract that would tie her to a franchise for years. She preferred the calm of her hometown to the noise of Los Angeles.
It was a risky bet.
Zack Snyder called her in 2011 to star in Sucker Punch. The role required her to sing several songs from the soundtrack herself and to go through grueling physical training. Critics were merciless toward the film, accusing it of being an exercise in empty style.
That same year, she starred in Sleeping Beauty under the direction of Julia Leigh. It was a complex shoot in which Browning played a student who submits to an experiment in absolute submission. The film competed at the Cannes Film Festival and sparked intense debate about the male gaze in cinema.
And the public did not always understand her choices.
In 2014, she worked with Stuart Murdoch on God Help the Girl. It was a small production partly funded through crowdfunding, where she could explore her musical side in a more intimate way. Browning has always looked for characters who feel uneasy or who live on the margins of traditional storytelling.
Her move to television was sealed with American Gods in 2017. She played Laura Moon over three seasons and brought a much-needed coolness to a character who was technically dead. The writers expanded her role in the story compared to Neil Gaiman's original novel, thanks to her ability to hold long close-ups.
In 2015, she shared the screen with Tom Hardy in Legend. She played Frances Shea, and her voice-over guided the entire film about the Kray gangsters in 1960s London. The film's budget reached 25 million dollars, and critics noted that she was the only human element in a story full of gratuitous violence.
Browning never sought easy applause.
In 2023, she starred in the series Class of '07 for Prime Video. The show was filmed entirely on location in Australia under the direction of Kacie Anning. The script blends survival comedy with school drama, and Browning leads a cast made up almost entirely of women in an apocalyptic setting.
The series premiered on March 17, 2023 with a total of eight episodes produced by Matchbox Pictures.
