Richard Roxburgh didn't want to be an actor. He studied economics at the University of Canberra before theater crossed his path by accident. He graduated from NIDA in 1986 and began working on Sydney stages almost immediately.
And it worked.
In 2000 he played Hugh Stamp in Mission: Impossible II under the direction of John Woo. That role as a sadistic henchman opened the doors of major American studios for him. But it was his performance as the Duke in Moulin Rouge! in 2001 that fixed his image in the minds of global audiences.
That caricature of a pathetic, possessive aristocrat let him play physical comedy few had expected. Filming at Fox Studios Australia was exhausting because of the constant musical improvisations. But Roxburgh managed not to be overshadowed by the visual spectacle of Baz Luhrmann.
The audience bought the concept.
In 2004 he took on the challenge of playing Count Dracula in Van Helsing. The film received mediocre reviews, but his exaggerated, theatrical performance became the most talked-about part of the movie. Years later, the actor admitted that working with so many green screens was alienating for someone trained in classical theater.
In 2010 he premiered Rake on Australian television. Roxburgh was not only the lead but also the creator of Cleaver Greene (a self-destructive, brilliant lawyer). The series ran for five seasons and became a cultural phenomenon in his home country.
He won the Logie Award for Best Actor in 2011 for this role. The industry often types Australian actors as flat villains when they arrive in Hollywood. Roxburgh broke that pattern by showing he could carry a complex story through vulnerability and cynicism.
Sometimes talent is a matter of persistence.
Because theater was always his safe haven. In 2017 he made his Broadway debut in The Present alongside Cate Blanchett. The production was an adaptation of Platonov by Chekhov and received praise for the electric chemistry between its two leads. Performances sold out for weeks at the Barrymore Theatre in New York.
In 2022, he worked with Luhrmann again on the film Elvis. He played Vernon Presley (the singer's father) with a restraint that contrasted with the excesses of the early 2000s. It was a supporting role, but a crucial one for understanding the family dynamics behind the Memphis myth.
Box office doesn't always keep up with prestige.
In 2024 he starred in the series Prosper, playing Cal Quinn. The character is the charismatic leader of a megachurch who hides financial and moral secrets behind a facade of holiness. The first episode drew a massive audience on the Stan platform during its premiere night.
The series Prosper was filmed entirely on location in New South Wales during the winter of 2023.
