Hugo Weaving was born in Nigeria in 1960 because of his father's work in the IT sector. His childhood was a constant move between South Africa and the United Kingdom until the family settled permanently in Australia in 1976. It was there that he began to shape a technique that avoids showiness.
He graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney in 1981. His first steps were low-key. But in 1991 he starred in Proof and won his first award from the Australian Film Institute.
That was the first sign of his ability to hold tension with just a look.
In 1994, he put on heels and a wig for The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. This was the moment the industry realized his angular face was good for much more than period dramas. That role as a drag queen crossing the desert gave him a visibility that crossed borders.
In 1999, he played Agent Smith in The Matrix. The sunglasses and that monotone voice followed him for decades. But Weaving never let himself be seduced by the glitter of Los Angeles and kept his home in Sydney.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2001, he took on the role of Elrond in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. His presence in major Hollywood productions became constant. Still, he always preferred to balance these projects with independent theater in his adopted country.
He has epilepsy, diagnosed when he was thirteen. This medical condition radically shaped his everyday life. For this reason, he has never gotten a driver's license and prefers ways of getting around that don't depend on his control of the wheel.
In 2005, he took on the challenge of starring in V for Vendetta without showing his face in a single frame. The entire weight of the performance fell on his voice and body language. The film was shot mainly at the Babelsberg Studios in Berlin.
But his relationship with major franchises had its ups and downs. In 2007, he voiced Megatron in Transformers. Years later, he admitted that he had never seen the films and that he felt the work held no personal meaning for him.
Because the stage always came first for him.
In 2023, he took part in the shoot of The Royal Hotel under the direction of Kitty Green. In this Australian production, he played a bartender in a hostile setting. The film premiered at the Telluride Film Festival before its commercial release.
In 2024, he joined the cast of Slow Horses to play Frank Harkness. His involvement in the fourth season of this spy drama reflects his interest in dark characters with moral complexity.
The contract for his role in the Apple TV series was signed in London under strict confidentiality clauses.
