Carrie-Anne Moss kept a broken ankle hidden for weeks so she wouldn't be removed from a film set in 1998. The injury happened during training for The Matrix, and she chose to hide it out of fear of losing the opportunity of a lifetime. That physical toughness defines a career that has always preferred discretion over the noise of the red carpets in Los Angeles.
Before coming to the United States, she spent a season in Barcelona shooting the series Dark Justice. She was 1991, and television ran on very different codes from the globalized industry. That experience in Spain helped her understand the craft from a technical foundation, while living in a country where no one knew her name.
No one on the production team noticed her injury until filming wrapped.
The casting for Trinity involved hours of grueling physical auditions under the watchful eye of the Wachowski sisters. They were looking for a presence that could command authority on screen without needing dialogue. But the process was so demanding that Moss at one point doubted her ability to keep up with the pace of a blockbuster of that scale.
And the gamble paid off.
Christopher Nolan called her in for Memento in 2000 because he wanted a coldness that would contrast with the protagonist's confusion. In that film she proved she could carry a psychological thriller without wires or digital effects. It was a smart move to keep the industry from typecasting her exclusively in action movies.
But the industry tends to be slow to give work to actresses who are over thirty. During the 2000s, she took part in projects such as Chocolat and Disturbia, where she sought characters with a more down-to-earth emotional weight. She avoided big franchises for years to focus on her family life and on building her own conscious lifestyle platform.
In 2015, she entered the Marvel universe through the series Jessica Jones, playing lawyer Jeri Hogarth. It was a pragmatic decision that let her work in New York and explore a morally ambiguous character who broke away from the traditional heroine. The series stayed on air until 2019 and helped her regain a visibility she had deliberately given up.
In 2024, she accepted the role of Master Indara in the series The Acolyte, set in the Star Wars universe. The shoot in the United Kingdom required a physical preparation that brought back memories of her years of choreography training in Australia. Despite the passing years, she kept the ability to perform her own fight scenes without constantly relying on stunt doubles.
So her return to the fantasy genre was not a matter of nostalgia but of pure technique.
In 2021, she put her sunglasses back on for The Matrix Resurrections, directed by Lana Wachowski. The San Francisco shoot included a scene where she jumped off a 43-story building 20 times alongside Keanu Reeves. The production chose to do the real jump at dawn rather than use a green screen, in order to capture the city's natural light.
The fourth installment of the franchise grossed 157 million dollars at the worldwide box office.
