Bryan Cranston had planned to become a police officer in Los Angeles until a college acting class changed his mind. His father was an unlucky actor who abandoned the family when Bryan was 12 years old. That trauma shaped his childhood in the San Fernando Valley, but it didn't dampen his desire to try to make a living from the screen.
During the years 80 and 90, he took whatever work came his way. He recorded aspirin commercials and voiced monsters on the series Power Rangers to pay the bills. In 1998 he had a key encounter with Vince Gilligan in an episode of The X-Files, playing a desperate man who needed speed to keep his head from exploding.
That was the beginning of the end of his anonymity.
In 2000 he landed the role of Hal in the comedy Malcolm in the Middle. Over seven seasons he proved he could handle extreme physical comedy and stand around in his underwear without losing his dignity. But the actor wanted more than canned laughter, so he began directing episodes of the series to understand how the machinery worked from the other side of the camera.
When Vince Gilligan wrote the script for Breaking Bad in 2007, he had only one name in mind for Walter White. AMC executives turned Cranston down right away because they only saw him as the clumsy dad from a family sitcom. They offered the role to John Cusack and Matthew Broderick, but both passed on the project.
Gilligan refused and forced the executives to watch the episode of The X-Files they had shot years earlier.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2008, the story of the chemistry teacher who cooks methamphetamine premiered, and the world discovered an actor capable of conveying terror with a single movement of his jaw. He won four Emmy Awards for this role and became one of the most bankable faces in American television. The character of Heisenberg was such a heavy physical burden that in 2013 he finished filming with a tattoo of the series logo on his ring finger to remember the journey.
After his run on Albuquerque ended, the actor looked for projects that would take him far from the desert. In 2015 he received an Oscar nomination for Trumbo, playing the screenwriter persecuted by McCarthyism in Hollywood. He didn't take home the statuette, but his status already let him choose scripts without going through prior auditions.
In 2019, he launched a craft mezcal brand called Dos Hombres with his co-star Aaron Paul. The company was born after a trip to Oaxaca and became a source of income that directly competes with his acting salary.
But theater remains his technical haven.
In 2020 he starred in the series Your Honor, playing a New Orleans judge caught in a web of lies to save his son. The production was extended through 2023 due to strong viewership on digital platforms. In 2024 he voiced the character Li in the fourth installment of Kung Fu Panda and appeared in the spy film Argylle, directed by Matthew Vaughn.
His production company, Moonshot Entertainment, currently holds an exclusive deal to develop content with Sony Pictures TV that expires at the end of the 2025 fiscal year.
