Bruce Gray was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 1936 by chance of his parents' work.

Although he grew up in Toronto, that mix of roots gave him a cosmopolitan edge that shone on North American television for decades.

Before becoming the familiar face of 1990s series, he spent years honing his craft in British theater.

His training was classical, but his rhythm was purely televisual.

The Supporting Player Everyone Recognizes

Gray never sought top billing because he understood better than anyone the value of a good supporting role.

In the series Traders, filmed between 1996 and 2000, he played banker Adam Cunningham with a technical coolness that earned him a Gemini Award.

It was precisely that ability to project authority that opened the doors of major genre franchises for him.

He appeared in Star Trek: Enterprise playing an admiral in 2005.

But his big commercial break didn't come with space uniforms or financial dramas.

It happened in 2002.

No one expected a five-million-dollar independent comedy to end up grossing 368 million worldwide.

He played Rodney Miller in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, the stiff, bewildered father-in-law who tried to make sense of a loud Greek family's traditions.

That role brought him international visibility that the stage had not given him until then.

Mature Years and Auteur Cinema

Despite late fame from the comedy, Gray kept working on niche projects and cable television.

He appeared in the series Queer as Folk between 2002 and 2005, playing George Schickel.

His acting style was built on economy of gesture.

He didn't need to shout to dominate a scene.

In 2015, director Guillermo del Toro cast him in a brief role in the film Crimson Peak.

He appeared as William Tansy in a production that kept a Gothic aesthetic down to the last detail.

It was one of his last high-profile jobs before his health began to decline for good.

Bruce Gray died in Los Angeles in December 2017 from a brain tumor.

He was 81 years old and had left behind more than 100 credits in film and television.
