Martin Roach doesn't seek the spotlight. Born in Toronto, he has been working in the shadows of major Canadian productions since the 1990s. His face is familiar to anyone who watches cable TV, but few know he started out voicing cartoons.
In 1996, he lent his voice to the series Cyberchase. That gave him valuable experience. But genre films are what truly kept him working for decades. He appeared in films such as Cube Zero in 2004, where he played Jax. He is a quiet, method-style actor who rarely gives long interviews or appears on the covers of fashion magazines.
The Shape of Water changed his international profile in 2017. Guillermo del Toro chose him to play Brewster. On that production, Roach realized that a good supporting actor is worth more than a mediocre leading man. He worked alongside Octavia Spencer, and his physical presence commanded respect without him having to raise his voice.
And the phone didn't stop ringing.
In 2018, he joined the cast of The Expanse as Admiral Souther. Science fiction fans respect him because he brings a gravitas that few supporting actors manage to convey. He doesn't rely on cheap acting tricks. He simply stays present, listens, and reacts with almost surgical precision.
He is almost always cast as a cop, a military officer or a judge. He appeared in Suits between 2014 and 2015 playing a high-ranking officer. It seems his square jaw and deep voice have set his career path. But he doesn't seem to mind.
Roach prefers the security of a steady paycheck to the risk of fleeting stardom.
In 2021, he joined the world of Mayor of Kingstown. There he plays Captain Ian Ferguson. It's a tough, physical, and gritty shoot. Working alongside Jeremy Renner requires him to maintain a high level of intensity in every take inside the prison. Roach is the kind of actor who takes whatever comes his way as long as the script makes sense.
Not many people remember that he was also in The Strain back in 2014. He played a guy named Lar, a small but intense role. His ability to move from animation to crime drama is his greatest tool. He has more than 150 credits on his professional profile in the film and TV industry.
In 2024 he took part in the final season of The Umbrella Academy. He played Officer Gene Thibedeau. It was a fast shoot in Toronto, his hometown, where he still lives when he isn't in Los Angeles. So his life runs between airports and high-security film sets.
The Canadian industry considers him a safe bet. In 2022, his schedule was packed with three different projects shot simultaneously. He doesn't have a publicist for major events. He only has an agent who handles contracts and a calendar that rarely has any open slots.
His per-episode fee stays at the high standards set by the actors' union.
The budget for his latest series topped 80 million dollars. Roach signed his nondisclosure agreement before receiving the first draft of the script in his email. There were no photos on set and no leaks to the trade press during the months of filming in Ontario.
