Baltimore, 1962. During the Cold War, Elisa Esposito works as a cleaner at a top-secret government laboratory, a high-security building with very restricted access. Elisa is mute and communicates through sign language. She was found as a girl beside a river, with scars on her neck, and since then she has lived somewhat apart from the world around her. Her social life is limited to two people. Giles, her neighbor, is a middle-aged commercial illustrator who has not yet come out of the closet. Zelda, her coworker, is the other trusted person Elisa shares her shifts and routine with. The film is directed by Guillermo del Toro and stars Sally Hawkins.
