Trivia about Dopesick

The first episode was watched by 261,000 American households on Hulu during its first four days of release. That figure comes from data by a company that measures viewing on certain smart TVs.

The series had 12.62 times the average demand for TV shows, making it one of the most-requested nominees in the Emmys' Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series category.

At the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards, the series received 14 nominations, and Michael Keaton won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.

Keaton also won the Best Actor award at the Golden Globes (79th edition), the SAG Awards (28th), and the Critics' Choice Television Awards (12rd).

Filming began in December 2020 in Richmond and Clifton Forge, Virginia. North Carolina and Georgia were also vying to host the production, but Virginia was chosen.

Beth Macy introduced the writing team to a doctor who had abused painkillers and then recovered; his experiences served as a source for building the character of Samuel Finnix.

Danny Strong suggested Barry Levinson as director because he considered him the right person for the series, and his involvement helped convince Michael Keaton to take part.

During filming of the final scenes, Strong rewrote a sequence the night before after learning new information, and the crew shot it the following day.
