Synopsis of Unbelievable

Unbelievable is a drama miniseries created by Susannah Grant, Ayelet Waldman and Michael Chabon, streaming on Netflix. Marie is an adopted teenager who reports being raped. The Washington police don't believe her and accuse her of lying, so she must face a new life marked by suspicion, social pressure and doubts from those who take her in, including her adoptive parents. Meanwhile, in Colorado, detectives Grace Rasmussen and Karen Duvall, played by Toni Collette and Merritt Wever, investigate several similar cases that may be connected. Both want to find out who is behind the attacks and how far the truth of Marie's account goes. The story is inspired by real events that took place between 2008 and 2011.

Trivia about Unbelievable

Netflix announced that the miniseries had been watched by more than 32 million viewers after its release on the platform.
At the 2020 Golden Globes, the miniseries earned four nominations, and Toni Collette was the only winner of the night in the supporting actor category.
Toni Collette plays Grace Rasmussen, a character inspired by Edna Hendershot, a detective with the Westminster Police Department.
An episode of This American Life radio program about the same case, titled "Anatomy of Doubt," was also released.
The series won a Peabody Award and received nominations at the Critics' Choice Awards, the Golden Globes and the Primetime Emmys.
Susannah Grant explained that Toni Collette discovered the project on their own and was directly drawn to the role before joining the cast.
Production filmed the miniseries in various locations across California, including Los Angeles, Malibu, Moorpark, Thousand Oaks and West Hollywood.
Grant, Sarah Timberman and Lisa Cholodenko chose to develop the story in eight episodes because that format allowed them to cover more aspects than a film would.
