A Charlie Kaufman Film

A young woman travels with her boyfriend to meet his parents. She has long been thinking about ending the relationship, and the trip puts her face to face with that decision, which she can't shake from her mind. Jessie Buckley plays the lead and Jesse Plemons plays the boyfriend, while Toni Collette and David Thewlis play his parents. Charlie Kaufman writes and directs the film, which opens with the couple on their way to a house she has never seen. Trivia about I'm Thinking of Ending Things

In December, Brie Larson was cast alongside Jesse Plemons for the film, but in March 2019 Jessie Buckley replaced her in the cast.

The film is a loose adaptation of Iain Reid's novel 2016, which Charlie Kaufman wrote and directed for the screen.

Critic Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com praised Łukasz Żal's cinematography for its 4:3 aspect ratio, which he said forces viewers to focus more closely on what appears in the frame.

In June 2025, IndieWire ranked the film at number 22 on its list of the best films of the 2020s so far.

Charlie Kaufman initially planned a 30-day shoot, but production had to cut it down to 24 days due to time and budget constraints.

Kaufman wanted to build a car and a collapsible farmhouse to make certain shots easier, but the budget didn't allow for those sets.

The production hired more than 400 extras and day players, plus 20 local professionals, for scenes shot in a restaurant and a high school in the Hudson Valley.

The film won two awards from the Boston Society of Film Critics in 2020: Best Screenplay for Charlie Kaufman and Best Editing for Robert Frazen.
