In a devastated future Philadelphia, James Cole lives in seclusion in an underground complex beneath the city's ruins. The planet's surface was contaminated by a virus, and the few survivors take refuge underground. Cole is a convict who wants a pardon, so he volunteers for dangerous missions for the scientists. The scientists ask him to travel back in time and gather information about the original strain of the virus, which is believed to have been released by a terrorist organization. Directed by Terry Gilliam and starring Bruce Willis, the film opens with Cole sitting in front of an interrogation room. There, the scientists explain his mission, and the protagonist begins to realize the plan carries more risks than it seems.
