Bruce Willis earned five million dollars for Die Hard in 1987. It was an obscene figure for an actor coming from television who had barely any experience in pure action movies. But the Fox producers were desperate, because Schwarzenegger and Stallone had turned down the role of John McClane.
And the gamble paid off.
Willis was not a gym-built athlete with impossible muscles. On screen he looked like an ordinary guy having a bad day, one who actually bled when he stepped on broken glass. That sweat and sarcasm connected with audiences in a way earlier action heroes had not managed to.
Before moving to Los Angeles, he worked as a waiter in New York while looking for his break in theater. His childhood stutter disappeared when he stepped onto a stage. So young Bruce quickly realized that acting was his emergency exit.
The series Moonlighting made him famous in 1985 alongside Cybill Shepherd. There he polished the image of the charming rogue that he would later exploit on the big screen. But TV success tends to be a cage, and Willis needed an aggressive move to avoid getting trapped in romantic comedy.
In 1994, the actor agreed to take the union minimum wage to work on Pulp Fiction. Quentin Tarantino needed a star who could lend commercial credibility to his second film, and Willis was looking for prestige after several box office flops. Playing the boxer Butch Coolidge earned him back the respect of international critics.
Because Willis knew his charisma didn't depend solely on explosions. During the nineties he alternated commercial projects with risky bets such as 12 Monkeys by Terry Gilliam. In that film he showed he could come undone and step outside his comfort zone without losing the audience's favor.
The Sixth Sense grossed 672 million dollars in 1999 and changed his standing in the industry. Willis accepted a low base salary in exchange for a percentage of the profits (a move that earned him close to 100 million dollars). It was the last major peak of his absolute dominance at the global box office.
And then came the saturation.
From the 2000s onward, the actor began prioritizing short shoots and quick paychecks. He took part in franchises such as The Expendables, but his interest in deep scripts seemed to have evaporated. He began to earn a reputation as a difficult actor on movie sets due to his distant attitude.
In 2022, his family announced that he was retiring from acting due to aphasia affecting his cognitive abilities. The news explained why Willis had made 22 low-budget films in just two years. He was building up savings to secure his family's future before language abandoned him completely.
Many of those shoots lasted only two days for him. He used an earpiece so that his lines could be read to him, because he could no longer memorize scripts. But the public didn't find out until the decline became impossible to hide in the promotion of his final projects.
In 2023, he was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia. After his real health condition became known, the Razzie Awards withdrew the special category they had created for his performances that year.
His last filmed movie was Assassin, and it was released in March 2023.
