Demetria Gene Guynes was born in Roswell in 1962. Her childhood was a mess of constant moves and family alcoholism that ended with her out of the house at sixteen. Before turning twenty, she was already working on the TV series General Hospital after trying her luck as a model in Europe.
But her first big stroke of luck was joining the group of young actors of the eighties. In 1985 she shot St. Elmo's Fire, and that role as a drug addict with upper-class aspirations put her permanently on Hollywood's map. And the bet paid off.
In 1990 she made Ghost. The film grossed more than $500 million worldwide and turned her into the highest-paid actress on the planet. Moore understood before anyone else that commercial film was a business of power and total visibility.
In 1996 she earned $12.5 million for starring in Striptease. No woman had reached that figure for a film contract until then. The press punished her for it.
The tabloids called her greedy and difficult, while her male peers of the same generation earned double without facing criticism. That public scrutiny coincided with the box office flop of G.I. Jane in 1997. Audiences didn't accept seeing her with a shaved head and a hyper-muscular physique after years of roles built on traditional sensuality.
After years of supporting roles in projects such as Margin Call in 2011, her career found a new focus in body horror. Moore decided she no longer needed the approval of major studios to validate her standing in the industry.
In 2019 she published her memoir, Inside Out. The book was a bestseller because it frankly discussed her addictions and her relationship with her mother. It also detailed the health problems she faced during her marriages to Bruce Willis and Ashton Kutcher.
In 2024, she starred in The Substance.
This film directed by Coralie Fargeat forced Moore to confront her own physical image on camera in an almost violent way. The script explored the obsession with eternal youth and the hatred of an aging body. It was an exhausting shoot of 108 days in Paris, where the actress spent much of her time under layers of silicone and latex.
Because Moore has always preferred physical risk to professional oblivion, she accepted a role that many actresses her age would have turned down for fear of damaging their public image. The production of The Substance required six hours a day of prosthetic makeup for the final sequences of the third act.
