Eileen Brennan never sought the sympathy of the audience. She had a voice like sandpaper and a gaze that could freeze the Texas desert. In 1971, Peter Bogdanovich cast her as Genevieve in The Last Picture Show. As the small-town waitress who comforted lost teenagers, she earned an Oscar nomination.
The industry soon recognized that Brennan was the ultimate supporting star.
But her range went far beyond dry drama. Before moving into film, she had already triumphed on Broadway with Little Mary Sunshine in 1959. That musical satire earned her an Obie and proved that her comic timing was perfect. Eileen understood that laughter often springs from the deepest bitterness.
In 1980, she accepted the role of Captain Doreen Lewis in Private Benjamin. Sharing the marquee with Goldie Hawn catapulted her to a level of fame she had not experienced in her earlier work. Her portrayal of a relentless military officer worked so well that she reprised the character in the TV series of the same name between 1981 and 1983.
She won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for that small-screen work. Audiences Loved to Hate Her because beneath her toughness there was always a deeply human vulnerability. But her luck changed suddenly one night in 1982 after dinner with her friend Goldie Hawn.
A car struck her as she left a restaurant in Venice, California. The impact shattered her legs and caused severe facial injuries that required plastic surgery. Her recovery was a three-year ordeal that nearly ended her career.
Pain became her only companion on set.
She spent months in a painful rehab process that led to a serious dependence on painkillers. In 1984, she checked into the Betty Ford Clinic to treat her addiction. It was a public struggle she never tried to hide from the specialized press of the time, because she preferred honesty to the mystique of stardom.
Despite the physical aftereffects, she returned to work with iron discipline. In 1985, she joined the ensemble cast of Clue, where she played Mrs. Peacock. The film was a box-office disappointment at first, but over the decades it became a cult classic that continues to generate steady licensing revenue.
During the 1990s, she turned to television to maintain her financial stability. She appeared in hit shows such as Will & Grace, where she earned another Emmy nomination in 2005 for her role as Zandra. She never stopped working, even as breast and bladder cancer began to wear down her strength irreversibly.
And her determination to keep going paid off until the very end.
Her last film appearance was in Naked Run in 2011. Eileen Brennan died at her home in Burbank in July 2013, at the age of 80. Her children reported that her death was caused by complications from bladder cancer. The funeral was private, and TV cameras were not allowed in.
