... all it takes is a little trust.

Joliet, Illinois, 1936, during the Great Depression. Johnny Hooker is a con artist who makes a living running the big store con alongside his partners Luther Coleman and Joe Erie. After taking a considerable sum from an unsuspecting mark, the crew comes across a windfall they never expected. Luther, emboldened by the score, decides to retire and suggests Johnny visit an old friend in Chicago, Henry Gondorff, to learn "the big con" from him. Johnny wants to move up to a more ambitious kind of scam, and the road to Chicago marks the start of his new ambition. The film is a heist comedy directed by George Roy Hill, with Robert Redford as Hooker and Paul Newman as Gondorff.

Trivia about The Sting

Director George Roy Hill deliberately avoided using extras in the street scenes, just as gangster films of the 30s didn't feature them either.
Newman agreed to take part after securing top billing, a fee of $500,000, and a share of the profits, following five films that had flopped at the box office.
Inspired by a recording by Gunther Schuller, Hill reportedly commissioned Marvin Hamlisch to arrange Scott Joplin's music for the film.
Co-producer Tony Bill, a classic car enthusiast, contributed several vintage vehicles, including his own 1935 Pierce-Arrow limousine.
