Synopsis of The Golden Girls

Four older women share a house in Miami, Florida, and face their golden years with humor, friendship and plenty of chaos. The home's owner is Blanche Devereaux, a widow who posted an ad on a local supermarket bulletin board. Responding to it were Rose Nylund, also a widow, and Dorothy Zbornak, who is divorced, and the three ended up sharing the house. Dorothy's mother, Sophia, joins them, completing the group. The leads seek to enjoy their later years without giving up fun or independence. Through confidences, rivalries and problems affecting their families, their partners or their own decisions, living together becomes the heart of the series.

Trivia about The Golden Girls

The series' ideas came about in August 1984, during the taping of an NBC special at the Warner Bros. studios in Burbank, California.
The producers wanted McClanahan to play Rose and White to play Blanche, but both switched roles at the last minute on the suggestion of director Jay Sandrich.
The four leads won a Primetime Emmy Award, making the series one of only four sitcoms in history in which the entire main cast received this honor.
The pilot for Empty Nest was included in an episode of The Golden Girls, titled "Empty Nests," and starred Paul Dooley and Rita Moreno.
The pilot featured Coco, a gay houseboy played by Charles Levin, who lived with the leads, but the character was later dropped.
A copyright infringement lawsuit filed by Nancy Bretzfield claimed the series was based on a script that NBC had rejected in 1980. It was later settled.
The Golden Palace, the spin-off starring White, McClanahan and Getty, never matched the popularity of the original series and ended up ranked 57 in the annual ratings.
The series finale of "The Golden Girls" was watched by 27 million viewers in the United States, according to the ratings cited for the show's farewell.
