Synopsis of The Stand

After a deadly plague kills most of the world’s population, the remaining survivors split into two groups - one led by a benevolent elder and the other by a maleficent being - to face each other in a final battle between good and evil.

Trivia about The Stand

Before Stephen King settled on Jamey Sheridan, Randall Flagg could have been played by Sam Neill, Christopher Walken, Jeff Goldblum or Willem Dafoe, among other actors.

Rob Lowe was going to play Larry Underwood, but proposed the role of Nick Andros, a deaf-mute character, and convinced Garris that he was a better fit for the production.

The total budget was 26 million dollars, more than double that of King's previous miniseries aired on ABC, which had been set at 12 million.

The four parts reached about 19 million households, and the first part earned a 20.1/32 rating.

The miniseries was nominated for six Primetime Emmy Awards and won for Outstanding Makeup for a Miniseries and Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Limited Series.

Production designer Nelson Coates created all 225 sets for the miniseries.

Moses Gunn had been cast as Judge Farris, but he died shortly after filming began, and Ossie Davis, who was on set accompanying his wife, took over the role.

Whoopi Goldberg was considered to play Mother Abagail, but couldn't accept because she was working on "Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit" (1993).
