Molly Ringwald did not have a conventional childhood in California. Her father was a blind jazz pianist, and she was already singing in his band before she turned seven.
In 1979, she landed her first significant television role in the series The Facts of Life. But her life changed when John Hughes saw a photograph of her and decided she would star in his next movie.
That gamble paid off.
In 1984, Sixteen Candles was released, and audiences discovered an actress who didn't need to overact to convey the drama of adolescence. Her contract with Paramount made her the central figure of a cinema that was beginning to take young people seriously.
Then came The Breakfast Club in 1985 and Pretty in Pink in 1986. Ringwald became the center of a phenomenon the press dubbed the Brat Pack, a label she always resented for what it implied about a lack of professional seriousness.
In the late 1980s, she turned down the lead roles in Ghost and Pretty Woman. She didn't want to keep playing the girl next door and was looking for projects with a different dramatic weight.
In 1991, she decided to move to Paris to escape the pressure of Hollywood. There she shot Malina and immersed herself in French culture, far from the photographers who had chased her in Los Angeles.
It was a risky decision for her bank account.
During those years in Europe, she worked in independent films and learned to manage her image from a distance. She returned to the United States to take part in the miniseries The Stand in 1994, based on the work of Stephen King.
In 2008, she accepted the role of Anne Juergens in the series The Secret Life of the American Teenager. She went from being the daughter in trouble to the mother trying to understand a new generation of teenagers.
She was no longer the anxious young woman of the eighties.
This stage lasted five seasons and gave her the professional stability she was looking for. She signed major advertising contracts and began publishing her own fiction books to diversify her income.
In 2012, she released When It Happens to You, a novel structured as a series of short stories that explored family betrayal. Literary critics praised her ability to write direct, unadorned dialogue.
Her career stayed low-profile for years.
In 2022, she played the stepmother of a serial killer in Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. It was a grim job that gave her the chance to work with Ryan Murphy for the first time in a highly demanding technical environment.
She worked with the producer again in 2024 on the series Feud: Capote vs. The Swans. In this production, she played Joanne Carson and shared the cast with actresses such as Naomi Watts and Diane Lane.
The series was filmed mainly on location in New York, and its costume design exceeded a budget of one million dollars.
