Jerry Wasserman was born in Cincinnati in 1945, but his face belongs to the collective imagination of Vancouver. He is a rare case in the industry. While other actors chased fame in the bars of Los Angeles, he was finishing a PhD in English literature at Cornell University.
That duality shaped his entire career.
In 1986, he played the lawyer in The Fly by David Cronenberg. It was one of those supporting roles that define a career. Wasserman never needed to be the main star for viewers to remember his presence. His approach was always technical precision and complete control of his voice.
In the late 1970s, he decided that teaching was not incompatible with working on sets. He joined the University of British Columbia (UBC), where he stayed for decades. He published Modern Canadian Plays in 1985, a text that remains an academic reference in drama departments.
Still, film kept knocking on his door constantly.
In 1993, he took part in Alive, the recreation of the plane crash in the Andes. It was a physically demanding, exhausting shoot that cemented his reputation as a dependable actor for the major studios filming in Canada. He worked on three films a year and still graded literature exams during production breaks.
He never let the vanity of the film industry devour his academic rigor.
By 2004, he was working under Alex Proyas in I, Robot, playing Dr. Baldez in a $120 million blockbuster. His schedule became a puzzle of flights and seminars. In 2009, he played Detective Fine in Watchmen (the adaptation by Zack Snyder), bringing a much-needed sobriety to a world of dark superheroes.
And his pace did not slow down with age.
In 2017, he appeared in the series The Good Doctor, playing Dr. Glassman in the pilot. But his appearance in 2023 in The Last of Us as Abe confirmed that his range remained intact for the new streaming platforms. He doesn't chase easy applause, but the truth of the character.
Wasserman has more than 200 credits on his IMDb profile. His retirement as professor emeritus at UBC did not slow his work in front of the camera. In 2024, he still lives in Vancouver, the city where he has built most of his professional career. The Canadian actors' union honored him with a lifetime achievement award in 2012 for his contribution to the development of the local industry.
